Vincent Audio - SP331 MK Hybrid Power Amplifier (Silver)

Vincent Audio - SP331 MK Hybrid Power Amplifier (Silver) Reviews

Other Picture

Vincent Audio - SP331 MK Hybrid Power Amplifier (Silver) Feature

  • Vacuum Tube Input Stage, Solid State Output Stage
  • Operates in Pure 'Class A' for the First 10 Watts
  • Tubes: 2 x 6N16, 1 x 12AU7
  • Nominal Output Power RMS/8 Ohm: 2 x 150W
  • Nominal Output Power RMS/4 Ohm: 2 x 300W, Class A/8 Ohm: 2x 10W
Step up to the new Vincent SP-331MK hybrid design vacuum tube/solid state power amplifier. Its stellar performance shoots far above the already celebrated SP-331 by offering pure 'Class A' output for the first 10 watts. You won't believe the pristine quality of the sound. The combination of a vacuum tube input stage and solid state output stage gives you the best of the classic Golden Age richness that only tubes deliver. It also delivers the power, control, and reliability associated with solid-state electronics. "For the money this is an unbelievable amplifier," says Maarten van Casteren in his June 2008 review for England's TNTaudio.com. "There's a definite valve sweetness and warmth to it, combined with genuine power, excellent control and very good resolution. It has a warm and generous personality that doesn't dominate the sound. Very highly recommended." The words 'no nonsense' and 'luxurious' usually don't go together, but the Vincent SP-331MK is a rule breaker. Thanks to German engineering, the look and sound are clean as a whistle. And the price is far less than you would expect to pay for a component of this high quality. The SP-331MK offers one more tube than the SP-331, boasting two 6N16s and one 12AU7 for 'Class A' output. Twelve Toshiba output transistors per channel complement the huge 1,000-watt power transformer with 80,000 mF capacitance per channel. All of this muscle provides a potent 150-watts RMS at 8 ohms or a full 300-watts RMS at 4 ohms. The SP-331MK gives you one pair of RCA inputs and two pairs of high-quality speaker binding posts with a Speaker A+B function.

Harman Kardon AVR 230 Audio/Video Surround Receiver

Harman Kardon AVR 230 Audio/Video Surround Receiver Reviews

Other Picture

Harman Kardon AVR 230 Audio/Video Surround Receiver Feature

  • High-current audio/video surround receiver with 50 watts x 6 in surround mode
  • Processing for Dolby Digital/Dolby EX, and DTS (DTS-ES, Neo:6) 6.1-channel discrete and matrix
  • Dolby Pro Logic II and proprietary Logic 7 simulated surround sound
  • Features 6.2-channel preamp outputs
  • Measures 17.3 x 6.6 x 15 inches (W x H x D)
Harman Kardon's future-ready 6.2-channel AVR 230 provides outstanding performance and value with its high-current 50-watts-per-channel amplifier, abundant inputs, high-bandwidth HD-ready component-video switching, and through features such as Harman's exclusive Logic 7 and VMAx surround-sound processing, Triple Crossover bass-management system, multichannel direct inputs for DVD-Audio and SACD, and other enhancements. Power output for the receiver is 6 x 50 watts (6 channels driven), or 2 x 65 watts in stereo (in both cases from 20 to 20,000 Hz into 8-ohm speakers, with less than 0.07 percent THD).

The receiver offers extensive installation flexibility and connectivity, including front-panel audio/video and digital-audio inputs. You also get five A/V inputs, component-video switching for two sources, and a supplied universal remote control featuring patented EzSet automatic speaker-level calibration and advanced system control capabilities.

The unit's authoritative surround processing includes the two major surround formats, Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1, as well as the latest 6.1-channel incarnations, like Dolby Digital EX and DTS-ES. A 6.1 configuration adds a rear-center speaker to the standard 5.1 setup of front left/right, front center, and rear left/right surround, with the ".1" representing the low-frequency effects channel handled by your powered subwoofer. The AVR 230 offers two subwoofer outputs in case you're using separate left/right subs in your system. Two proprietary Harman audio technologies, Logic 7 7.1/5.1, and VMAx, deliver heightened sonic realism from surround sound and stereo audio source material.

The AVR 230's Triple Crossover bass management is critical for balancing the inputs from different surround formats--including the 6/8-channel "direct" analog inputs to accommodate playback of high-resolution digital-audio formats such as DVD-Audio and SACD. The receiver's bass management seamlessly integrates these formats with any speaker system, regardless of the capabilities of the playback device.

Select from three different bass-crossover frequencies for the front, center, and surround speakers to perfectly tailor the audio output fed to each set of speakers for optimum frequency response and performance. This compensates for the absence of bass management on many high-resolution optical players (like DVD-Audio or multichannel SACD players) so you can enjoy the maximum sonic benefits from high-resolution formats.

What's in the Box
Receiver, remote control, remote batteries, a user's manual, a quick-setup guide, and warranty information. Powerful enough to bring action movies thundering to life, and versatile enough to accept virtually any source material, the AVR 230 is an impressive performer. It has a six-channel, high-current amplifier, and Dolby Digital and DTS decoding, along with Logic 7 Dolby Pro Logic II and DTS Neo: 6 to its credit. Featuring an EzSet remote with on-screen menus, component video switching and seven-channel architecture for adding a full complement of rear surround speakers, it's a home theater system you can grow with.

Motorola DCP501 All-In-One Home Theater Receiver

Motorola DCP501 All-In-One Home Theater Receiver Reviews

Other Picture

Motorola DCP501 All-In-One Home Theater Receiver Feature

  • Space saving, all-in-one system houses a DVD/CD/MP3 player, audio/video surround receiver with 100 watts x 5, and cable reception
  • Interactive cable receiver for analog and digital (where available) cable
  • Dolby Digital, DTS, and Dolby Pro Logic II 5.1-channel processing for immersive surround sound from any source
  • AM/FM Stereo receiver, large VF display for easy reading
  • NTSC decoder with digital adaptive comb filter upconverts all composite-video signals to S-video
Motorola's DCP501 home-theater system not only simplifies the hookup of everything from cable TV to VCRs and satellite receivers--it also unifies audio and video media playback and amplification within one easy-to-use device. The DCP501 combines the functions of a digital cable receiver, a DVD/CD/MP3 player, a 100-watts-per-channel surround receiver, and an AM/FM stereo receiver. For DVD viewing with immersive, high-quality surround sound, just add speakers and a television. The plug-n-play unit supports Dolby Digital 5.1, DTS, and Pro Logic II surround formats.

For cable reception, the DCP501's 50 to 860 MHz tuner supports clear analog, 64 and 256 QAM clear and encrypted digital cable services. Where available, the tuner is also compatible with Motorola-enabled digital cable services in both two-way and telephone-return cable systems. (It also supports Motorola DCT2000 digital cable applications.) The receiver's high-performance, Tripath Class-T audio amplifiers deliver 100 watts to all five main channels (left, center, right, and left/right surround), while built-in preamplifier outputs let you use the device as a preamplifier with a more powerful stereo or multichannel power amplifier.

Extensive inputs and outputs include front-panel audio/video hookups for a camcorder or gaming console, including a Toslink optical input for a direct digital-audio hookup with an external device. Two additional digital-audio inputs are found on the back panel (one each optical and coaxial), and an onboard NTSC decoder uses a digital adaptive comb filter to upconvert all composite-video signals to S-video for use with higher-resolution S-VHS VCRs and compatible TVs.

Crucially, any video input source can be converted and/or channeled to any of the three video outputs for maximum convenience when using the DCP501 with a VCR, DVR (digital video recorder), or other device.

What's in the Box
DCP501 cable-ready home theater system, a universal remote control, remote batteries, a self-install kit, FM/AM antennas, six-foot composite-video/analog audio interconnect, six-foot S-video cable, six-foot coaxial video cable, and a user's manual.
